Waxes for Scented Candles

There are numerous types of scented candle available on the market today. The most common is a paraffin scented candle such as Yankee Candles or Price’s Candles. These use paraffin as their fuel and are made from a fast depleting resource, crude oil. Paraffin is a hydrocarbon similar to petrol, diesel and other crude oil derivatives and burns very well (as you would expect). In burning, paraffin releases all manner of toxic substances such as benzene and carbon monoxide. Not good from a health and environmental stand point. More on this later.

Greener waxes are available. Soy wax is natural plant based wax made by hydrogenating soy oil. The soy oil is obtained by crushing soy beans and the waste products from the process are fed to cattle. They in turn fertilise their pasture and so the cycle goes on. The manufacturing process is similar to that used in making margarine. The resultant soy wax is a clean burning creamy soft substance that is ideal for scented candle manufacture. The burning of soy wax has been shown to produce none of the toxic or carcinogenic substances found in burning paraffin wax.

Palm wax and other vegetable based natural waxes are available. These waxes are similar but do tend to have drawbacks. One of these is that these waxes are usually self scented (they emit their own fragrance). This is not a great quality for making scented candles as the candle maker must overcome this scent in reaching their desired fragrance. These other vegetable waxes also usually suffer from being too soft at room temperature. Other additives are sometimes required to stabilise them in order that they remain solid at room temperature. Beeswax is also a natural wax which can be used for making scented candles. However, beeswax is also self scented and is therefore unsuitable for the majority of uses. It is also expensive in comparison to the other waxes available.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin is undoubtedly a fine burning wax. It ignites well and produces a good strong flame. So it should given its origins as a derivative of crude oil. The major drawbacks to using this wax in scented candle manufacture are the sustainability of the resource from whence it came and also the toxicity of the products of combustion in its use. Who would knowingly burn something in their home that the scientific community recommends be used in a well ventilated space? Surely that defeats the point of a scented candle.

The reason that paraffin is used today as a fuel for scented candles is primarily its cost. It is far cheaper to manufacture a paraffin candle than one made from soy. The raw paraffin wax is approximately one third the cost of soy wax. Hey presto, large commercial organisations steer toward this as they can significantly increase profits on each unit manufactured.

UK national newspapers recently published articles that tested various types of scented candle made using an assortment of waxes. The findings of these scientific studies indicated both toxic and carcinogenic emissions from paraffin wax candles whilst soy wax candles were given a clean bill of health. This is a very clear reason to promote soy wax candles and discontinue the use of paraffin scented candles.

Soy wax

Soy wax creates a wide and deep melt pool in scented container candles. This launches the fragrance into the air. Besides these excellent burn qualities, soy wax is from a sustainable resource, is safe and clean to handle and is carbon neutral. The obvious comparison is wood to heat our homes. As tree is to wood is to heat, so soy wax can be described as plant to wax to candle.

Other Waxes

In the Authors experience, other waxes have intrinsic problems in manufacturing scented candles. This includes the self scent of the wax, cost, burn characteristics and stability at normal room temperature. For this reason, further descriptions etc have been curtailed in this fact sheet.

In Summary

When I entered college, my roommate and I found there were a lot of things to do. We studied very hard every day and had no time to relax. We used to sit still in library or classroom all day and gradually we became fatter and fatter. We had a good performance in our study and also won the scholarship and prize from school, but we found it is very hard for us to have a girl friend, simply because we were badly out of shape. So we decided to go to gym daily.

We found out later that this was not a good idea. Once classes were done on the first day, we walked briskly to the gym. Once there, we were taught all the basics from warming up to cooling down. We were then given various programs so that we wouldn’t crowd the equipment and end up having to queue. While this was a good idea, we later realized there was still a problem. Being in the same room with friends, you cannot help but talk to each other and even make jokes. The entire thing was a failure from the start. We couldn’t concentrate on our tasks because we kept making fun of each other and talking with one another.

When I returned home, I was tired and disappointed. We did not have a right workout method. When I was surfing the internet, however, I came across a wonderful thing. It was the P90x workout program. Each and every person in the world can astral project. In fact, many of us do so, although we might not know that this is what we’re doing. The ability to consciously astral project and be in control of the experience can be learned with practice.

You probably already know about the astral body and the astral plane, so we’ll jump right into techniques which can assist you in your efforts to learn how to astral project. Different people do better using different methods, so you’ll probably want to try out a few until you hit on one which gets good results for you.

One technique you can try when you’re lying in bed before you sleep follows. There are five steps to follow in this technique.

*First: Start by tensing, then relaxing every part of your body. Start with your toes and work your way up to your head. You’ll probably begin to feel heavy; this is nothing to worry about and is a sign that you’re becoming deeply relaxed.

*Second; Take slow, deep breaths and concentrate on the feeling of the air filling your lungs. When you exhale, do so slowly and visualize your stress and tension exiting your body with each breath. You’ll need to stay focused during this step, since it’s easy to fall asleep when you’re this deeply relaxed.

*Third; Concentrate on the feeling of your body’s total relaxation. Think of it as a stone or a lump of earth; something which is heavy and immobile. Now refocus your attention to your astral body; think about how light it feels, weightless in fact. Close your eyes and visualize your astral body floating away on the breeze.

*Fourth ; Right now, you may experience what many people do while practicing this technique; the sensation of seeing around in your darkened room, even with your eyes closed. The room will appear to be illuminated by a purple light. If you experience this, try to focus on the ceiling.

*Fifth; Visualize yourself pulling this light from the ceiling towards your astral body. You’ll feel like your floating (your astral body will in fact be floating; if you look down, you might see your physical body still in bed).

If you’ve made it this far successfully, you are astral projecting and can begin on your astral travels. If this method doesn’t work for you, however, there is another technique which many find useful.

This technique can help you as you learn to astral project. This is called the gazing method and it’s quite simple. You need to choose something to focus your attention on; it doesn’t really matter what it is, just something which is visible from your bed.

Gaze at this object and stay focused on it. Eventually, your eyelids will become too heavy to keep open; but if you’ve succeeded you’ll still be able to see this object in front of you. Continue to gaze at it until you feel an urge to stand up. When you do, you’ll see your physical body lying in bed asleep! Don’t be alarmed; this means you’ve succeeded and can begin to astral travel.

Don’t give up if you don’t succeed the first time you try these techniques. Practice makes perfect and if you just aren’t having luck with these methods, there are plenty of others you can try. Just stick with it and be patient and you’ll learn how to astral project sooner than you think.

It’s less important how you do it as that you are able to get the message to your subconscious mind that there’s nothing to fear about astral projection and that it’s perfectly fine for your astral body to leave the physical realm and travel. One good way to communicate with your subconscious is to repeat affirmations to yourself.

There are a lot of different methods of learning to astral project and whatever works for you is a good way to go.

Hypnosis is useful for many, since it can easily produce the deeply relaxed state needed. A guided hypnosis session is especially helpful, since you’ll have an expert to explain every step along the way.

New audio technology has enabled something called binaural beats which can produce a relaxed, meditative state using slightly different frequencies in each ear. A lot of people find binaural beats to make it easy to astral project.

It’s really not that hard to learn how to astral project. It’s simply a matter of practice. You already have this capacity, but you’ll need to work at it to develop this skill. The specific methods of astral projection vary, but one thing always stays the same. No matter what astral projection methods you use, the first step is always getting focused and relaxed. You have to have a quiet mind and a mind set that will let you reach beyond your physical boundaries. Once you do this you are ready to explore the endless universe.

Focused relaxation is not easy. One must simultaneously relax every muscle and still every thought all while maintaining the presence of mind to stay conscious. The most common reason an astral projection attempt fails, in fact, is because the candidate does not maintain his or who focus through the relaxation phase of the process, and thus, simply falls asleep.

To start getting into the necessary relaxed state you should prepare by dressing in loose clothing. Sit is a place where you won’t be distracted or disturbed. You should avoid laying down as a beginner since it is too easy to become too relaxed in that position and fall asleep.

Once seated comfortably, imagine that tension is a fabric bandage that has been wrapped over every inch of the body — much like a mummy – that tightly constricts even the smallest of toes. Next, imagine those small toes being unwrapped. Warm blood flow returns, as does the feeling of cool air to the skin’s surface. Imagine the same process for each individual toe until all ten toes have been “freed.”

Imagine next the balls of the feet, the arches, the heels and the ankles also being unwrapped in this way. Continue the process until the chin, the sinus cavities of the face, and the tip of the scalp are all free.

You should be in total relaxation, but still clear minded. You are ready to try one of the methods of astral projection.

One of the main astral projection methods is called the rope method. This requires a little preparation before you start the relaxation phase. Tack a rope above you so it is within reach. It will help with the mental visualization as you can reach up and touch it as needed.

Hanging the rope will let you easily find it with your astral fingers. You will float to the rope and use it as a guide once you are relaxed. In the beginning it can be a little tricky to find the rope, but after a while you will have no trouble doing so. Just remember to be focused.

Once you find the rope you will be pulling your astral bod up the rope and out of your physical body. It is like you are climbing the rope. Do not think about weight since your astral body weighs nothing. Just focus on climbing. You may feel dizzy at this point. Just ignore that feeling as it will pass and it could cause issues with your projection.

Continue “climbing” the rope until liberated from the physical body, all the while ignoring any sensations of vertigo, nausea, humming, warming, heaviness and/or tingling that may accompany the process. Any and all of these sensations are normal to a successful astral projection experience.

Variations of the rope method include the lift method, in which one visualizes him or herself pulling upward from the physical body and hovering above it; the roll out method, in which an individual envisions him or herself rolling to either side of the physical body (works best when lying down), as well as the fixed and moving anchor method.

The fixed method and anchor method involved picturing an object. In the fixed method you are pulling your astral body to the object and in the anchor method the object is pulling your astral body to it. Once you are free your astral body can then roam and explore.

It is important to know that astral projection methods are not immediate. You must learn and practice the process. You may fail in your first attempts, but always keep your attitude positive. Make sure that you understand why you fail if you do. You can often be too tired, not focused enough or distracted.

The more dedicated the individual, however, the sooner he or she will be able to troubleshoot these issues, master the methods of astral projection, and ultimately, transcend the limitations of the physical body.
